What Sports Do Kids Participate in at Pony Club?

Pony Club provides a wide variety of equestrian sports and disciplines that cater to different interests and skill levels, giving young riders the chance to explore various activities and develop as all-around equestrians. Some riders start to focus on a different equestrian sport from a young age but some like to try many to find their passion.  Pony Club provides those experiences for your riders.

Pony Club Sports for Young Riders

Some of the most popular sports and activities offered by Pony Club include:

  1. Dressage

Dressage, a sport that focuses on developing a harmonious partnership between horse and rider is offered in Pony Club there are regional and National Dressage competitions. Pony Clubbers perform a series of precise movements, known as “tests,” that showcase their horse’s obedience, balance, and flexibility. Dressage helps riders refine their communication skills and teaches the importance of subtle cues and positioning.  Dressage is also one component in Pony Club Rallies and three day eventing.

  1. Show Jumping

In show jumping, pony Clubbers navigate a course of obstacles, aiming to complete it with the fewest faults, such as knocking down a rail or exceeding the time limit. Pony Club members develop their jumping techniques and learn to tackle different types of fences, from verticals to oxers, building confidence and agility in both horse and rider.

  1. Eventing

Eventing, also known as the “triathlon of the equestrian world,” combines dressage, show jumping, and cross-country. This challenging sport tests a rider’s ability to compete in multiple disciplines while emphasizing versatility and endurance. Eventing is a thrilling activity that gives Pony Club members the opportunity to push their skills to new levels.

  1. Mounted Games

Mounted Games are fun, fast-paced competitions that involve a variety of relay races and challenges, such as bending through poles, picking up objects, and handoffs between riders. This sport helps young riders improve their coordination, balance, and teamwork, all while having a great time.

  1. Polocrosse

Polocrosse is a unique sport that combines elements of polo and lacrosse. Not every Pony Club offers polocrosse but if you are lucky enough to be able to try this sport you will learn concepts of polo as well.  Riders use long-handled racquets to catch, carry, and throw a ball, working as a team to score goals. Polocrosse is an excellent way for Pony Club members to develop their riding skills, quick thinking, and strategic planning.

  1. Tetrathlon

Tetrathlon consists of four events: riding, running, swimming, and shooting. This sport encourages overall fitness and versatility, as riders must not only excel in the equestrian phase but also showcase their athleticism and accuracy in the other disciplines. There are many national championships that you can participate in to showcase your skills.  If a Pony Club does not offer tetrathlon, you can always offer to head it up like my sister who loved doing this sport for its variety.  Tetrathlon provides a great way for kids to experience the thrill of competition across multiple areas.

  1. Horse Trials

Horse trials are similar to eventing but are usually shorter and may only include one day of competition. Riders compete in dressage, show jumping, and cross-country, honing their skills in a more condensed format. It’s a great way for Pony Club members to gain experience and confidence in multi-discipline events.

  1. Hunter Seat Equitation

Hunter Seat Equitation focuses on the rider’s form and effectiveness while navigating a course of natural-looking fences. Riders are judged on their position, control, and the smoothness of their round. This sport helps develop a rider’s finesse and attention to detail.

  1. Quiz Competitions

Quiz competitions are a unique aspect of Pony Club that test members’ knowledge of equine care, anatomy, riding theory, and more. Quiz often takes place over a weekend for a full day and was always so fun for me!  Participants answer questions, identify items, and demonstrate their understanding of horse management, providing a way for kids to showcase their academic knowledge of horses in a fun and competitive format.

Why Are These Sports Important?

The diverse range of sports offered in Pony Club allows young equestrians to discover their interests, develop specific skills, and experience the excitement of competition. These activities not only foster physical fitness and mental discipline but also teach valuable life lessons such as perseverance, teamwork, and goal-setting. By participating in different sports, Pony Club members become well-rounded riders with a broad set of abilities, making them more adaptable and confident both in and out of the saddle.

How to Get Started in Pony Club Sports

To get involved in these sports, Pony Club members typically start with the basics in their local branch and then progress to more specialized training based on their interests and skill levels.
